Expanding Efficiency: Stratford and Leamington Hospitals Join South Warwickshire Hospital on ecoDriver

January 2026

South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust is taking the next step in its journey toward net zero. Following the successful implementation of ecoDriver at Warwick Hospital in 2025, the Trust is now rolling out advanced sub-metering and monitoring across its Stratford and Leamington sites.

This expansion moves the Trust beyond high-level oversight into granular, actionable intelligence, ensuring every kilowatt is accounted for.

Building on Proven Success

The momentum for this project began last year when  the Trust secured funding through the National Energy Efficiency Fund (NEEF) to kickstart its monitoring capabilities, more details on this project here.

This year, thanks to new funding via the Central Energy Procurement Agreement (CEPA), that same level of scrutiny is being applied to Stratford and Leamington. Our team has already completed the comprehensive meter survey and design strategy in line with CIBSE TM39; we are now moving into the installation and setup phase.

Targeted Insights: Electricity and Heat

While the goal is a unified energy view, the technical approach is tailored to the specific needs of each site:

  • Stratford Hospital: The primary focus is on comprehensive electricity sub-metering to identify peak load anomalies and equipment inefficiencies.
  • Leamington Hospital: A dual approach will see the installation of both electric and heat meters, providing a complete picture of the building’s thermal and electrical performance.

By breaking down consumption into these granular layers, the Trust can identify any energy waste and where it is occurring. This data is also vital for measuring the ROI of other green technologies—if you install new LED lighting or heat pumps, ecoDriver provides the hard evidence of their impact.

Intelligent Analysis with EDDIE

Data is only useful if you have the time to interrogate it. To support the Trust’s busy estates teams, who are part of wholly-owned subsidiary company, SWFT Clinical Services Ltd (SWFT CS), our AI Assistant, EDDIE (Eco Driver Data Intelligence Engine), will be active across all sites.

EDDIE acts as a 24/7 analyst, automatically spotting trends, comparing meters against degree day data, and flagging anomalies that might otherwise go unnoticed. Rather than just presenting a problem, EDDIE provides advice and guidance on suggested actions to remedy inefficiencies, effectively acting as a digital member of the sustainability team.

Security, Transparency, and Competition

We understand the rigorous requirements of NHS IT infrastructure. To ensure total peace of mind, all monitoring uses dedicated cellular network gateways. This means no ecoDriver devices sit on the Trust’s internal internet network, maintaining a complete air-gap for security.

Furthermore, we believe in “open” partnerships. All equipment installed by ecoDriver uses open protocols. The Trust owns its data, and the hardware is compatible with other software or systems in the future ensuring long-term flexibility.

One Portal, Many Users

All three sites will feed into a single, centralised ecoDriver cloud portal. This allows for:

  1. Top-down oversight for Trust and SWFT CS executives to monitor carbon goals.
  2. Site-specific access for local managers to focus on their own department’s performance.
  3. Healthy competition between sites to see who can achieve the greatest reductions in energy waste.

By making the invisible visible, South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust and SWFT Clinical Services Ltd aren’t  just monitoring energy—it is actively engineering a more sustainable future for healthcare in the region.

About South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust

South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust (SWFT) provides comprehensive hospital and community services to a population of over half a million people across Warwickshire and the surrounding areas. Rated as Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission, the Trust operates across four main sites: Warwick Hospital, Stratford Hospital, Royal Leamington Spa Rehabilitation Hospital, and Ellen Badger Hospital. As a member of the Foundation Group, SWFT is recognised as a national leader in integrated care and digital innovation, recently winning the 2024 HSJ Trust of the Year award.

The Trust is also at the forefront of NHS sustainability, with a clear commitment to reaching Net Zero by 2040 through large-scale decarbonisation projects and the implementation of advanced energy management technologies.

About SWFT Clinical Services Ltd

SWFT Clinical Services Ltd (SWFT CS) is a wholly owned subsidiary, proud to be part of the NHS family. The company’s purpose is to support the NHS by delivering high quality services that enable reinvestment into patient care. SWFT CS provide estates and facilities services at SWFT sites, including energy and sustainability, and outpatients pharmacies across Coventry and Warwickshire.

About ecoDriver

ecoDriver is a powerful energy management software solution designed to provide clear insights into energy consumption. ecoDriver collects granular data from the entire estate and presents it in an accessible format, making it easy to understand energy usage patterns and pinpoint areas of waste for removal and cost reduction. By integrating environmental and local weather data, ecoDriver delivers rich context for data analytics, supporting informed decisions and offering empirical evidence of energy.

With the introduction of EDDIE, ecoDriver’s AI Sustainability Assistant, analysing energy data and identifying/rectifying inefficiencies has never been quicker or easier.
