Data, Decisions and Decarbonisation: Barts Health NHS Trust partners with ecoDriver

April 2026 We are proud to announce that St Bartholomew’s, Newham, and Mile End hospitals—three cornerstones of the Barts Health NHS Trust—are joining the ecoDriver platform.

This partnership follows a successful bid for National Energy Efficiency Fund (NEEF) funding, specifically earmarked for carbon-saving initiatives. By the early part of 2026, these three major acute sites will be equipped with a comprehensive monitoring network, providing the granular visibility essential for a modern, sustainable NHS.

Bridging the Data Gap

Barts Health operates a complex, high-demand estate.   Our recent CIBSE TM39-compliant site surveys identified exactly where the data gaps in energy consumption lie. The recent installation bridges these gaps, picking up existing infrastructure where functional and deploying new IoT sensors and meters where needed.

The technical setup is designed for the modern healthcare environment:

  • Zero Network Impact: The system operates entirely independently of NHS IT networks.
  • Seamless Connectivity: Meters communicate via LoRaWAN or Modbus to gateways, which then transmit data to the cloud via secure cellular connections.
  • Unified Visibility: Trust-wide managers can view all three sites on a single dashboard, while local facility teams can focus exclusively on their specific hospital.

Meet EDDIE: AI with a Purpose

A key differentiator for Barts Health is the integration of our AI sustainability bot, EDDIE. While sub-metering provides the data, EDDIE provides the “so what?”

The platform’s AI interrogates consumption data to spot anomalies, identify inefficiencies, and alert teams to energy waste in real-time. This transforms the system from a passive record-keeper into an active member of the sustainability team, providing the empirical evidence needed to verify the success of future green technologies.

Beyond the Meter: Why Sub-metering Matters

For large-scale organisations like Barts Health, the business case for granular monitoring extends far beyond basic energy saving:

  1. Fair Tenant Billing: Avoiding floor-area estimates and using exact consumption-based recharging for commercial tenants, eliminating disputes and encouraging better energy habits.
  2. Bill Verification: Acting as a “shadow meter” to audit main utility invoices and catch billing errors or unmetered losses early.
  3. Investment Readiness: You cannot improve what you cannot measure. This data establishes the accurate baselines required for future Heat Decarbonisation Plans and large-scale capital bids.

A Greener NHS

This project is more than a technical installation; it is a strategic alignment with the NHS Net Zero target. By reducing the financial burden of escalating energy costs, the Trust can redirect vital resources back to where they matter most: patient care.

We are looking forward to getting started and helping Barts Health turn their Green Plan ambitions into measurable results.
