Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust partners with ecoDriver to drive energy efficiency at Northumbria House

July 2026

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust has taken a significant step towards its net zero 2040 goal by partnering with ecoDriver to implement a comprehensive energy monitoring and management system at Northumbria House.

The project focuses on transforming Northumbria House into a data-led facility, ensuring that every kilowatt of energy used is accounted for, analysed and optimised. This initiative follows a successful joint bid at the end of last year, where ecoDriver supported the Trust in securing vital NHS CEPA funding to drive these sustainability improvements.

Precision monitoring and CIBSE standards

To ensure the most effective data collection, ecoDriver conducted a detailed site survey in line with CIBSE TM39. This professional assessment identified the optimum areas for monitoring, leading to a robust hardware installation that includes a combination of heat and electric meters, along with pulse transmitters to collect and transmit data from metering already installed.

This new infrastructure is supported by half-hourly data from existing AMR (Automated Meter Reading) meters on site being brought into ecoDriver, providing a single, unified view of the building’s total energy profile.

Intelligence through EDDIE AI

A core feature of the partnership is the deployment of EDDIE, ecoDriver’s AI sustainability assistant. EDDIE will provide an extra layer of analysis by constantly interrogating the incoming granular data to:

  • Spot anomalies and consumption spikes in real time.
  • Suggest corrective actions to prevent energy waste.
  • Normalise energy data using heating and cooling degree day calculations.

By acting on these insights, the Trust can move beyond simple data collection to proactive energy management, saving significant time for the estates team and ensuring that efficiency remains a constant priority.

Achieving monetary and environmental savings

For Northumbria Healthcare, the primary driver for this project is achieving tangible monetary savings through the removal of energy waste. By gaining access to raw, granular data, the management team can now pinpoint exactly where energy is being used and identify the root causes of any inefficiencies.

This data-led approach will also be used to track the success of specific energy-saving initiatives, such as assessing the ongoing efficiency and performance of heat pumps on site.

As the NHS continues its journey toward a greener future, the implementation at Northumbria House serves as a blueprint for how high-quality data and artificial intelligence can be leveraged to reduce costs and carbon emissions simultaneously.
